JOB SUMMARY

The SMT (Surface Mount Technology) Technician supports high-volume electronics manufacturing by operating, setting up, maintaining, and troubleshooting SMT production equipment and processes. This role ensures stable line performance, product quality, and continuous improvement through equipment optimization, preventive maintenance, and collaboration with Production, Quality, and Engineering teams.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot SMT equipment including (but not limited to) solder paste printers, SPI, pick-and-place machines, reflow ovens, AOI, conveyors, and loaders/unloaders.
  • Perform line changeovers, feeder setup, program verification, and first-piece checks according to SOPs and work instructions.
  • Monitor machine performance, respond to alarms, and drive quick recovery to minimize downtime.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance (PM) and basic repairs; coordinate escalations and vendor support when needed.
  • Verify and adjust process parameters (e.g., printer alignment, paste volume, placement accuracy, reflow profiles) to maintain yield and quality.
  • Support new product introduction (NPI) trials, engineering builds, and process validation activities.
  • Perform material verification, feeder management, and component handling per ESD and traceability requirements.
  • Document issues, actions taken, and maintenance records in logbooks/systems; support root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective actions (CAPA).
  • Ensure compliance with safety, 5S, ESD, and quality standards (ISO/IATF if applicable).
  • Train operators on basic machine operation, alarms, and quality checkpoints as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical degree/certification preferred.
  • 13+ years experience in SMT/PCBA manufacturing (high-volume environment preferred).
  • Hands-on experience with SMT equipment and common tools (torque tools, hand tools, multimeter, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of ESD controls, SMT process flow, and quality inspection standards.
  • Ability to read and follow SOPs, work instructions, and basic technical drawings.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced production environment and supporting multiple lines.
  • Willingness to work overtime/weekends as business needs require.

PREFERRED SKILLS (NICE TO HAVE)

  • Experience with major SMT platforms such as Fuji, Panasonic, ASM/Siplace, Juki, Yamaha, etc.
  • Experience with DEK/MPM printers, Koh Young SPI/AOI, Omron AOI, Heller/BTU reflow ovens (or similar).
  • Basic understanding of reflow profiling and solder defect troubleshooting (tombstoning, bridging, insufficient solder, misplacement, etc.).
  • Familiarity with traceability systems and manufacturing execution systems (MES).

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods and lift up to 2535 lbs with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to work around moving machinery and in a manufacturing environment with PPE requirements.
