About this Job

About us

At Dyson we are encouraged to think differently, challenge convention and be unafraid to make mistakes. We’re creative, collaborative, practical and enthusiastic.

Dyson offers a unique opportunity for skilled individuals to invent, design and develop market leading products for the global market. By working in our world class research, design, and development (RDD) department, these professionals have the opportunity to work alongside leading technical specialists and highly motivated creative people to create products which fulfill our vision of being truly different and better than our competitors.

About the role

As a Design Engineer, you will be focussed on developing technology and features for future home robots with supervision. Within Upstream Robotics you will be a crucial member of a dynamic team to help meet and exceed the requirements of our products and embedded technologies. You will be working closely with other engineers, designers, scientists, specialists, downstream teams, and other cross functional teams to create and develop new features, technologies, product formats and business cases for projects in our portfolio.

What we need you to do…

  • Create and iterate concept models quickly using handmade or 3D printed parts to evaluate feasibility and user value via experimental testing.

  • Test multiple hypothesis in parallel at speed with a critical view of key questions to answers.

  • Analyse test results to understand what improves performance and collaborate with technical and non-technical colleagues, as well as suppliers to develop scalable and robust technologies.

  • Design mechanical systems using CAD tools and manage concepts to ensure designs meet performance and cost requirements. Validate designs through calculation, computer simulation, and lab-based testing, ensuring robustness and functionality at all stages.

  • Take ownership of engineering challenges, resolving issues thoroughly with a focus on technical excellence and accountability with guidance from Senior Designers and Design Managers.

About you

  • Education: A degree in a relevant engineering or product design discipline, capability of industrial design would be preferred.

  • Experience Level: Minimum of 2 years of experience in engineering or product development, with a focus on prototyping, concept development, and iterative problem-solving.

  • Domain Knowledge: Expertise in cleaning systems or robotic mechanism design, —including both simulation and physical testing.

  • Critical Thinking: Ability to test multiple hypothesis in parallel with a critical view of key questions to answers.

  • Product/Customer Focus: A genuine curiosity and enthusiasm for creating user-focused and commercially impactful products that challenge the status quo.

  • Communication: Strong communication skills, with the ability to present your work across disciplines.

  • Design Fundamentals: Experience with mechanical design principles, including 3D CAD, prototyping, and validation through simulation and lab testing.

  • Development Approach: A creative and considered approach to problem solving, following clear design processes. Able to systematically analyse test results to develop design concepts.

  • Agility in way of working: Thrives in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to plan, prioritize, and coordinate your work with others to meet project goals efficiently.

Benefits

Dyson monitors the market to ensure competitive salaries and bonuses. Beyond that, you’ll enjoy a transport allowance and comprehensive medical care and insurance. But financial benefits are just the start of a Dyson career. Professional growth, leadership development and new opportunities abound, driven by regular reviews and dynamic workshops. And with a vibrant culture, the latest devices and a relaxed dress code reflecting our engineering spirit, it’s an exciting team environment geared to fuelling and realising ambition.

Dyson is an equal opportunity employer. We know that great minds don’t think alike, and it takes all kinds of minds to make our technology so unique. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and employment decisions are made without regard to race, colour, religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, protected veteran status or other any other dimension of diversity.

Dyson solves real-world problems and creates better products through the application of engineering, science, design and creativity. It is a family-owned, global technology company, founded by Sir James Dyson who remains at the helm alongside his son Jake. Since inventing the first cyclonic bagless vacuum cleaner, the DC01, Dyson has consistently invested in research and development to improve its products and technologies radically. Dyson offers products across a growing range of areas: floorcare, air purification, robotics, haircare including formulations, lighting, hand drying, and most recently audio. Dyson continues to expand into new areas. Today, Dyson sells products in more than 80 markets, has 450 Dyson stores worldwide and is available in all major technology and beauty retailers. Dyson has global headquarters in Singapore and major technology campuses in Singapore, the UK, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Its global team of engineers, scientists and software developers are focused on developing technology-enabled products which work better and which people love to use. Key areas of focus have included high-speed electric digital motors, sensing and vision systems, robotics, machine learning and aerodynamics. Beyond products, to encourage an inventive future, Dyson is also inspiring the next generation of engineers and inventors through the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology, the James Dyson Foundation and the James Dyson Award. The Dyson family applies its problem-solving approach in other fields, and established Dyson Farming in 2012. It is one of the largest farming businesses in the UK, extending to 36,000 acres across Lincolnshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset. It is a family-owned enterprise unlike any other, focussed on long-term investment in British farming and the countryside to grow tasty and nutritious food.
