GIA (Gemological Institute of America)

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is a nonprofit organization based in Carlsbad, California, dedicated to professionalizing the gem and jewelry industry. Founded in 1931 by jeweler Robert M. Shipley, GIA focuses on education, research, gem identification, diamond grading, and instrument development. With a presence in 13 countries, it operates 11 campuses, 9 laboratories, and 4 research centers. GIA's mission is to protect buyers and sellers of gemstones by establishing and maintaining objective quality evaluation standards. The institute offers services such as gem identification and diamond grading using its International Diamond Grading System, which evaluates the four Cs: cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. GIA also provides educational programs, from correspondence courses to full-time gemology training, and develops gemological instruments to aid in the evaluation and identification of gemstones. Through its extensive research and resources, GIA supports the global gem trade, jewelers, and the public.
