Overview
AtkinsRéalis Geomatics use advanced technology to transform the raw survey data gathered from site into powerful decision-making tools. We offer a comprehensive range of survey and mapping services, from small scale ground-based survey to wide-area aerial 3D mapping. Since 2015 this has included a UAV survey capability.
Our team works closely with clients to identify a data collection method that meets their project and cost requirements, and to deliver the insight they need; whether that be to inform the design of a new development, optimise the route of new infrastructure or update existing building or site records for asset management purposes.
The role of UAV Survey Lead is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to take the lead role in developing the capability to the next level and supporting the promotion of our cloud-based platform for viewing and delivery of the data products.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record in managing and developing UAV Survey.
They will be based out of one of the following offices: Bristol, Birmingham, London & South East. They will have to be prepared to travel with the potential for short stays away.
Your role
Lead the UAV capability in terms of:
- Direction and development of the capability.
- Business development and costing/bidding for opportunities.
- Managing UAV surveys.
- Liaise with clients during production and delivery of work packages.
- Coordinating technical development and continuous improvement of working procedures.
- Actively support and promote our cloud-based platform Cirrus Insite.
- Coordinate and contribute to the wider Geomatics team, often working with them where other survey techniques are also required.
- Represent the business professionally to new and existing clients.
About you
Qualifications
A degree or further education qualification in a Geomatics/Survey related field.
Essential Criteria
A successful candidate must:
- Have experience of carrying out and managing UAV/drone surveys.
- Have bidding and proposal writing experience.
- Show an understanding of survey principles and accuracies.
- Have excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Be able to evidence examples of thought leadership.
- Hold or be able to attain security clearance.
- Be willing to travel throughout the UK to promote the UAV Survey capability and cloud platform to both our internal and external markets.
- Hold a current PFCO.
Desirable Criteria
Although an in-depth knowledge of all the below is not essential, experience in a selection of the following would be expected:
- Be chartered, working toward it or be a member of an industry institution (RICS/CICES).
- Have published articles or presented at industry events.
- Processing UAV imagery.
- Understanding of, or experience in the production of derived deliverables such as DTM, orthophoto, Topographic mapping.
- Experience of acting as a consultant for clients.
- Experience of delivering surveys using other techniques.
- Project delivery in the following sectors would also be an advantage:
- Rail
- Highways
- Infrastructure
- Energy
- Utilities
- Asset Management
- MOD

- Must be motivated to deliver project deliverables on time and right first time.
- Able to work to targets.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to define ideas clearly in producing reports.
- Able to deal with clients and senior management on a day to day basis.
- Able to communicate effectively and respectfully with overseas office staff.
- Flexible and able to solve problems and develop alternative methods as appropriate.
- Be fully self-motivated and able to work to tight and personally set deadlines without supervision.
- Ability to conform to defined quality assurance procedures and work processes.

Security clearance
