Job Summary:

Provide leadership and day-to-day management of the PLC Application Engineering Group in a manner which meets customer expectations while achieving organization’s business and strategic goals. Monitor the projects and tasks of the PLC Application Engineering Group to ensure that deliverables are on schedule and meeting project requirements. Delegate work, train, and mentor staff. Provide leadership and management of the Standards and Quality Programs for the Department.

This is a full-time, daily onsite position based in our Sacramento office. Regular in-person attendance is an essential function of the role.

Requirements

Essential Functions:

Department Leadership-

  • Provide departmental leadership and vision that promotes industry leading approaches and execution
  • Maintain industry awareness and participate in industry and marketing events
  • Develop annual and long term goals for the department
  • Attend managers meetings and activities, and company events, as required
  • Interface with other internal department
  • Provide periodic and situational liaison with the other department managers to ensure projects are being properly executed, and to identify process improvements
  • Participate in R&D efforts and support company initiatives, as requested

Onsite Leadership Presence-

  • Maintain consistent daily onsite presence at the Sacramento office to support staff leadership, collaboration, operational execution, and departmental performance

Staff Management and Culture-

  • Foster a team environment that empowers staff and promotes career development
  • Hold departmental meetings as outlined in the Company Strategic Communications Plan to communicate company and departmental direction and initiatives
  • These meetings should occur at least monthly and are in addition to other technical and/or project specific meeting
  • Communicate company requirements, policies and procedures to staff and address issues as needed
  • Develop supervisors so that each one is responsible for the performance of their group (quality, schedules, etc.)

Staff Development and Training-

  • Take the lead in the recruitment and selection of programming personnel required to meet staffing needs
  • Provide mentoring of staff to enable technical and career growth in line with company direction and goals; lead a mentoring program within the department
  • Establish and maintain a departmental staff training program
  • Evaluate employee performance; prepare and conduct performance appraisals and coaching. Make salary adjustment recommendations

Resource and Task Management-

  • Identify and assign available, appropriate staff to projects to meet deadlines, schedules, and technical requirements
  • Coordinate tasks and deadlines with project managers and schedulers
  • Lead a programming Resource Priority Meeting
  • Be responsible for projections of future resource needs; use existing tools, or develop new tools, for resource projections
  • Lead departmental recruiting efforts or staff reductions as needed
  • Participate in the development and management of a company-wide Master Schedule
  • Maintain a departmental WBS and manage tasks accordingly

Departmental Quality Management-

  • Initiate, develop, manage, and monitor a formal Application Programming Quality Assurance program which ensures adherence to CSIA, Tesco, and other industry best practices. All application programs and documentation shall be verified and tested. All testing and QC activities shall be documented. The program shall include documented Quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) requirements, procedures/SOPs, forms, and monitoring for KPIs

Standards Development-

  • Work with the SCADA Manager, lead Tesco’s program to develop, implement, and maintain applications programming standards for Tesco project work. Standards shall follow CSIA and other industry best practices.
  • Roll out the use of standardized program objects across multiple platforms and ensure consistent use on projects where they can be utilized
  • Develop detailed documentation on their use and application
  • Provide staff training, including appropriate non-PLC staff
  • Develop and manage the use of other departmental standards, as identified

Issue Resolution-

  • Support Tesco’s 24/7/365 support by assigning appropriate resources and ensure technical issues get resolved in a timely manner
  • Advise Engineering, Technical Services, Sales, and Production management on significant technical issues related to projects and products

Customer Relations and Sales Support-

  • Maintain a strong customer focus
  • Provide customer interface assistance when needed to solve issues
  • Provide technical expertise to Sales when requested to assist with project development, scopes and estimates
  • Provide estimating tools as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Demonstrated Skills:

  • Management of a group of engineers and programmers
  • Management of quality standards and a quality program for a department
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • High level of organizational skills

Education and Knowledge:

  • BS degree in Engineering, Computer Technology, or related field
  • Knowledge in programming major manufacturer (Allen-Bradley, Modicon) Tesco PLC & OIT
  • Process Control Applications expertise
  • Working knowledge of instruments and electro-mechanical devices used for process control

Experience:

  • 10 years' experience in a high-technology company
  • At least 5 years of supervisorial experience
  • At least 5 years of experience managing a programming team

Training Requirements:

  • Tesco Controls, Inc. general office safety training

Safety Requirements:

  • Required to follow all Safety Policies and Guidelines and hold team accountable to applicable safety standards
  • Document any hazards, correct hazards or provide safeguards as appropriate, and report to Safety & Facilities Supervisor, or HR
  • Required to wear appropriate PPE and/or eye protection when designated, and ensure PPE is worn by the team

Physical Demands:

  • Light physical effort
  • Regularly required to sit
  • May be required to work out in the field
